Humpheads - seen one?

Another sad story of a innocent species being overexploited, just for us to put on table.......sustainable farming is urgently needed...and also the cooperation from all of us..Don't you think so?
next time, THINK of the consequences before putting anything into our mouth..

"In Kudat, like in the Sabahan coastal towns of Tawau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu, fishermen continue to haul in humpheads (Cheilinus undulatus). Several times a week, these fish and the popular groupers, are bundled alive into air-filled plastic bags which are then packed into polystyrene boxes, transported to Kota Kinabalu, and sent on the evening flight to Hong Kong or Singapore. It is a time-perfected technique which gets seafood, alive and swimming, into restaurants.
Sabah exported 27,000 tails of humphead last year – an alarming figure since scientists believe wild humphead stocks in Sabah waters are almost exhausted and aggressive fishing can only doom the species.
Once a normal table fish, humpheads (or su mei) somehow acquired a luxury tag in the early 1990s. Those who want to flaunt their wealth and success would indulge in this pricey fish in restaurants in Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Malaysia. What used to sell for RM30 a kg in 1980 now goes for RM250 to RM300 a kg. Soon a scramble for the fish ensued.
Dwindling stocks
There are already signs that Asians’ taste for steamed su mei is depleting wild stocks.
“Sabah’s export of the high-value fish last year, although high, was just over half of the allowable quota. This can mean two things – either humphead populations are not really that big or the species has been over-fished,” says Tan.
Marine scientist Dr Steve Oakley warns that netting young fish before they have had a chance to breed will curtail future stocks of the species. Insisting on size restrictions for humphead harvests, he says breeding adult fish should be left in the sea. Better yet, he adds, humphead fisheries should be closed until it can be proven sustainable.
Lax enforcement, together with difficulties in patrolling Sabah’s 1,600km of coastline and extensive fishing area of 51,360 sq km, share the blame for the prevalent fish smuggling.
“Humpheads are even more endangered than orang utans because there are more orang utans in Sabah forests than humpheads in its waters. But you can still eat the fish in a KK (Kota Kinabalu) restaurant. We are decimating this species for a poor reason ... merely to put a fish on the table.”
To safeguard humphead trade, Sabah Fisheries has held several workshops to inform traders about the risks of over-fishing and Cites requirements. Come July, a new – and most likely lower – export quota is expected. But are there enough humpheads left in the wild to repopulate our reefs? In the end, the fate of this fish hangs on just one simple gesture from peopledon’t order su mei for dinner."

transparent butterfly??

TRANSPARENT BUTTERFLY

It comes from Central America and is found from Mexico to Panama. It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which is a natural camouflage mechanism.

A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by rain forest ecologists as an indication of high habitat quality and its demise alerts them of ecological change. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glasswing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red.
Lesson from Glasswing butterfly:
All things beautiful DO NOT have to be full of color to be noticed: in life that which is unnoticed has the most power.

Imagine there's no army

Imagine, a country with no army, would it be in total chaos? being invaded by other bigger countries within years? or would that country grow otherwise? This might sound far-fetched for most of us, but currently, there are more than 20 countries around the globe who have chosen to dispense their defense/attacking sources into bringing peace and stability to their countries. Instead of vast amounts of money spent on equipping and paying the military, these funds are available to finance worthier projects such as education, nature conservation, health initiatives and old age. Two of these countries are in Latin America: Costa Rica and Panama. In both cases, the decision was nothing to do with flower power or bed-ins, but pragmatic thinking to bring peace and stability to their countries.

In 1948, Costa Rica experienced a short but bloody internal conflict, following disputed elections. After victory, opposition leader Jose Figueres made a declaration: ‘The Regular Army of Costa Rica today gives the key to its military base to the schools…  The Government hereby declares the National Army officially abolished.’

Abolishing the army was evolutionary not revolutionary though, says Ivan Molina, a Costa Rican historian at the University of Costa Rica and coeditor of The Costa Rica Reader. ‘Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Costa Rican army had begun to lose importance. This was primarily due to a redistribution of the national budget for spending on education, health and pensions. And throughout the twentieth century, peace had been a key content of the Costa Rican national identity. The abolition of the army was more the culmination of a long process, rather than a sudden transformation.

40 years later, Panama followed Costa Rica’s lead. As in Costa Rica, the change was added to the constitution; Panama prohibited the existence of a standing military in the country.

Costa Rica, has set itself the ambitious target of becoming the world’s first carbon neutral country by 2021. The millions it saves go towards this. ‘Because Costa Rica has NO army, it has more funds for social programmes, social investment and social capital building,’ says Dr. Victor Valle, Associate Vice Rector of the UN-mandated University For Peace in Costa Rica. ‘But the most important outcome is that in Costa Rica there is a culture more inclined to civilian rule and peaceful conflict settlement. The Panamanian case is more recent but the effects will be similar: more funds for social change and a more civilian-oriented culture.’ Costa Ricans are proud to say that Costa Rica is a country with more teachers than soldiers.

In short, leading a country is not as easy as we think it is. To decide what and where the country is gearing towards, with short and long term goal, how and where to exercise nation's wealth to benefit everyone the most, is the toughest of all. First carbon neutral country, hmm.....never thought of that, carbon neutral country would surely contribute alot to the conservation of our diverse natural resources, apart from making us renown in the eyes of the world, Malaysia should  sets its aim on achieving that too!

Growing up

Photo: Getty Images

We all want to grow up.
We're desperate to get there,
to grab all the opportunities we can,
to live.

We are so busy trying to get out of that nest,
we don't think about the fact that it's going to be cold out there....
really freaking cold.

Because growing up sometimes means leaving people behind.
And by the time we stand on our own two feet,
we are standing there alone.

Stars of Malaysia, shining abroad :)

While reading this article from the STAR, i am thinking of my own future...which will unravel within months time.......all the best for me.... :)

"WHAT drives a person to uproot from a peaceful, modern country like Malaysia, known to the world for its easy-going charm, divine food and friendly people? The reasons are more varied than just earning better wages to have a higher standard of living.

MENTION the names Ignatius Rasiah and Dr Malini Catherine Olivo and few Malaysians would have heard of them.

These are two outstanding individuals, unacknowledged at home, who have contributed much to the advancement of science and technology in the world.

The couple is among 784,900 Malaysians working overseas, many of them highly educated or skilled. In foreign countries, these professionals claim to have found fertile ground to grow and develop their talents, through opportunities and facilities provided by both the government and private sectors which recognised their potential.

Ignatius and his wife Dr Malini left the country in the mid-1990s but not by choice. They were unable to get jobs after their post-graduate studies despite applying to several major local universities.
Today, Ignatius is a well-known materials scientist while Dr Malini is a pioneering medical scientist in the field of biophotonics – the use of lasers and light for the early detection and treatment of cancer.

Each time someone turns on a computer or snaps a photo with a mobile phone camera, he or she is using an electronic component developed by Ignatius and his fellow scientists.

“I touch someone every day of their lives each time they turn on the computer or take a digital picture,” Ignatius, currently based in Ireland, said in an e-mail interview.

Dolphin Slaughter in Denmark

Came across an interesting article today. The message sent across is as vibrant and strong as that in the movie THE COVE. This happens in Denmark, annually. I am just glad our country does not have any inhumane tradition like this. What was running through their minds actually when they are slaughtering those creatures like that?

Slaughter.  That’s a strong word… but not strong enough.
How else could one describe these images?

Mom is daughter's new classmate

"An unrepentant teenage truant has a new classmate to keep her from skipping school in southeastern Brazil: her mom.
Judge Evandro Pelarin of the Children's Court in the town of Fernandopolis says the 14-year-old girl regularly skipped class and was frequently seen in town loitering and consuming alcohol.
Pelarin told the Globo TV network Friday that the mother will have to attend classes with her daughter until the school says the problem has been solved. He did not mention any penalties should the mother not abide by his ruling.
He said the girl's parents supported his decision and agreed that attending classes with the daughter could help keep her in school.
The mother has had to quit her job as a housekeeper. - AP

Published Oct 16 2010, from http://www.dailychilli.com/news/7053-mom-is-daughters-new-classmate"

Nice move! Think our country can adopt this as well, then and only then, kids would not dare to skip classes from school and go loitering elsewhere, and the parents won't point their finger and say it's the school that's at fault.....
(mutual benefit as well, mom can learn stuffs they have forgotten from classroom lessons, and help to keep an eye on their kids, lessen teachers' job, hehe........)

How many of u guys out there say YES to this??

Biology

Let's talk Biology today.

Biology determines much of who we are since birth.
It determined our sex,
whether we are a left-hander, or a right,
how tall we can be,
blue eyes, fair skin, and brown hair.

Biology also determines much of the way we live.
From the moment we are born,
we learn how to breathe, to eat.
As we grow, we learn new traits,
become territorial, we seek shelter,we reproduce.

Sometimes, biology can turn on us though.
Yeah, biology sucks, sometimes.

Biology says that we are who we are from birth,
that our DNA is set in stone, unchangeable.
But,
we are human.
Life changes us.
We developed new traits,
become less territorial.
We learn from our mistakes,
we face our greatest fears.

For better or worse, we find ways to become more than our biology.
The risk, of course,
is that we can change too much,
to the point we can't recognise ourselves.

Finding the way back can be difficult, there will be no compass, no map,

we just have to close our eyes,
take a step,
and hope to God,
that we'll get there.

Letter after Marriage (Part 2)

From Wife

Dear IT Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a
distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the
flower and jewelery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable
programs such as NEWS 5.0, MONEY 3.0 and FOOTBALL 4.1.

Letter after Marriage (Part 1)

(have a great laugh guys!)

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0.

I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child
processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and
now monitors all other system activity.

Applications such as Poker Night 10.3, Football 5.0, Hunting and Fishing 7.5,
and Racing 3.6 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.

I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my
favorite applications. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0,
but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0. Please help!

Thanks,
A Troubled User.

Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem that men complain bout.
Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0,
thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program.

Happiness comes in THREE!!!!

hahahaha, when i woke up this morning, i am greeted with these,

and my face turns into

FREAK

"Nobody chooses to be a freak.
Most people don't even realize they are a freak until it's way to late to change it.
But no matter how much of a freak you end up being,
chances are, there's still someone out there for you.
Unless, of course, if they've already moved on...

Because when it comes to love....
even freaks can't wait forever."

Helpful postal worker

There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses.

One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about. The letter read:

Dear God,
I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension.
Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment. Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?
Sincerely, Edna

The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars.

By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened.

It read:
Dear God,
How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift.
By the way, there was $4 missing. I think it might have been those bastards at the post office.
Sincerely, Edna
